Award winning repositioning of a UN agency.

Working closely with the UNOPS communication team and a third party design house Hinderling Volkart (now a part of Dept) to update the agency’s public persona by delivering a fresh, new web visibility product that could more accurately reflect the dynamic nature of the organisation.

The project involved a departure from the technology status quo with a shift from Microsoft Sharepoint to a headless CMS - Craft CMS. The shift delivered on considerable cost savings and a superior experience for site visitors and authors.

The product also makes use of industry leading products from our technology partners with both Google Maps and Google Cloudsearch being key enablers for the site’s functionality.

There is also integration with other organisational products, with up-to-date project information being fed from the UNOPS data portal to the product and narrative stories travelling from the product to the data portal.

The project also involved a design philosophy departure with Brad Frost’s Atomic Design being at the very core of the project. The success of this decision has led to a fundamental change in the way that visibility products are built at UNOPS and it has been a key contributor towards the site’s longevity and ability to remain fresh without the need for further implementations.

Even with consideration towards the very serious mission of the organisation there are still somewhat playful delightful details sprinkled throughout the product that capitalise on low impact techniques such as traditional SVG and Lottie based animations.

The product was extremely well received garnering considerable positive feedback and winning a WebAward. But the true testament is that it has stood the test of time, with the external communications team still able to use the product to deliver upon their storytelling mission for the UN agency.

The approach taken for hosting the site was also a radical departure from previous work, with a containerised approach running on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) as well as utilising caching and a CDN. This approach gives an elastic and resilient product which scales to meet demand, self heals in the event of issues and allows for zero downtime product releases.
